What Does Cleaning Code X Mean?

Whether you like it or not, there will come a time in your furniture’s life where you need to clean the fabric or upholstery.

It may be as harmless as some gathered lint or hair that can be easily brushed off, through to something much more sinister like a grease or oil stain.

Regardless of the type of clean you need to do, there are some very important things to know before you start.

Arguably the most important consideration is the furniture cleaning code.

Cleaning codes dictate what methods can and can’t be used on a particular item, and if you choose to ignore them, do so at your own peril! Using the wrong cleaning method can absolutely destroy your favourite furniture or upholstery.

Today we take you through one of the rarer and most limiting cleaning codes out there – Cleaning Code X.

What is Cleaning Code X?

In short, Code X means no cleaning!

Well, that’s not exactly true, but it does mean that you can’t clean with any form of liquid cleaner – be it dry solvent chemical, water-based, vinegar or upholstery shampoo – none are allowed to touch it!

This type of material is designed for only vacuuming or light brushing to remove dry soils.

While it’s tempting to just splash a bit of water on a stain or odour patch, know that any kind of dry cleaning solvent or water-based solution applied to Cleaning Code X upholstery may cause shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile.

The potential damage from ignoring this warning might mean you end up with a much bigger problem than the initial stain.

So, How Can I Clean ‘Cleaning Code X’ Furniture?

If the issue is more than a simple brushing or vacuuming, then it’s best to put your code X fabric or upholstery in the hands of a professional cleaning service.

Furniture cleaning companies have generally had a lot of experience with all upholstery cleaning codes and can provide direction on the best way to go about it for your individual piece, or use professional cleaning equipment to do it for you, for a fee.

You can also call the product manufacturer to ask about the best cleaning method available.

If you do choose to undertake a water or solvent-based clean for your code x upholstery (and again, we strongly advise against this), be sure to spot clean a small inconspicuous section first to see what kind of results you can expect. But seriously, this isn’t the best way to go about it!

That’s It!

We hope this article has shed some light for you on the troublesome and tricky code X cleaning code.

If you’re dealing with anything more than a vacuum or soft brush can handle, our advice is to definitely consult a professional upholstery cleaner as code X material can be pretty unforgiving when exposed to dry clean solvents or a water-based cleaning product.
