The Beauty of Basics: YPPERLIG by IKEA x HAY
This October, IKEA launches their latest collaboration, done with the Danish design company HAY. The collection includes a wide variety of products, from larger pieces such as sofas and coffee tables all the way to smaller accessories like an updated version of the iconic blue IKEA bag. The phrase ‘Beauty of the Basics’ perfectly epitomises the collection, as by combining materials, colours and production techniques, YPPERLIG is a collection of traditional basics adapted to modern needs and wants, with an overall minimalist aesthetic. A contemporary yet ageless collection – just like the pieces themselves.
Mette and Rolf Hay are the husband-and-wife duo behind the design company HAY. Founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2002, HAY focuses on creating furniture with an eye for modern living using sophisticated industrial manufacturing. The couple draw inspiration from places such as architecture, fashion and art, resulting in pieces that have a straightforward, functional and aesthetic design. Simply put, a company that’s perfect for IKEA.
In total, the HAY x IKEA collection consists of just under 70 items, from candlestick holders to cushion covers, shelves to sofas and tables to tealight holders. Of course, each item has its own charm, and every piece compliments one another, making the collection as whole an effortless compilation of minimalist appeal. Here, however, are some of our ultimate favourites from the collection.
The Plank Table
Plank tables have always been a big part of Scandinavian furniture tradition. So it came as no surprise that HAY wanted to create a modern take on it. Using the latest board-on-frame technique that offers extra durability, combined with solid wood legs and a metal under frame, the outcome is a stable, white stained ash veneer table with a clean and natural look.
One of Rolf’s personal favourites, the monobloc chair, is due to be at the top of people’s wish list, with its minimalist and simplistic appeal, yet with a fitting modern aesthetic. Rolf even added that they liked the item so much, they added a dining chair model and a lower lounge chair, too.
The iconic IKEA bag
Of course, the ultimate IKEA icon is the traditional blue shopper bag, and it wouldn’t be a proper revamp without including this item in the new collection. So, without changing the size or material, Mette worked with the colours and the weaving patterns. The bag comes in three different colours, and the team also made a version that’s extra durable due to the nylon strap going all the way around the bottom of the bag.
So, make sure to keep an eye out for the release of the Ypperlig collection in October 2017, and let us know your favourite pieces!
